Most of the World Still Sleeps
6 a.m.
Nestled among the rocks of Trinidad a symmetrical swell was rolling through as the sun’s first rays began to kiss the water. The full moon still hung brightly on the Western horizon. Porpoises rolled in the glassy water, passing underneath my feet. Sea stacks rose as monolithic columns in the water to the North looking towards the Head. A delicate haze stood on the shore and color was being painted in the wispy clouds. It left me with the ethereal impression that I was sitting in […]
Heartbreak Hill
I should have been running but I could not take another step. I was standing in the middle of the street, in the middle of Boston, with hundreds of people watching my misery. I was covered in sweat, water, and Gatorade as the sun and humidity continued to drain my energy.
Both of my hamstrings were like softballs on the back of my legs – completely cramped with sudden violence as dehydration had set in. Just a minute before I had been pushing myself to maintain my 5:20/mile pace, when the cramps stopped me in my tracks, four miles from the […]
Inspiration- “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.” Steve Prefontaine
Once a week I will be sharing a story from my life. Please let me know what you think of this week’s story. I have shared these stories in sermons over the years. It is my hope to compile them into a book a year from now.
Ascend: INSPIRATION
“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”
Steve Prefontaine
The greatest distance runner in U.S. history stopped breathing. He was 24 years old. It seemed impossible. Four hours earlier he had won a 5000m race against some of the best runners in the world. But at 12:30 a.m., […]
No Running Together
Today I was informed that as a high school cross country coach, the kids are not allowed to run together until further notice. This is difficult news because the health issue isn’t just Covid-19. It’s physical, mental, and emotional health. These kids are starving for things to do and for purpose, camaraderie and support.
I am not pretending to know what is best – I just know that these are difficult times and I hope that we make decisions that are best and wise for the next generation.
We live in a rural community but the rollbacks continue within our contentious society. […]

“Bang! Bang! Bang!” I was jolted from my afternoon siesta as someone pounded their fist on my cabin door. “Is anyone in there?!” I lazily rubbed my eyes and sat up in my bunk bed. I had barely fallen asleep and I wondered what would warrant such a rude interruption.
Heidi and I were at […]
Leadership Essentials
As a “church leader”, I want to give you 3 essentials for effective leadership. These are biblically based, and are non-negotiables, for me. They are not new, or innovative. They are proven, and their presence, or their absence, will make or break you as an effective leader:
#1: The purpose of a leader is to empower others.
We equip others to do the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:12)
One way that we measure success is by assessing the number of volunteers we have in significant roles of leadership.
A leader’s job, is to work themself out of a job. Multiply yourself!
The highest […]
